One of the biggest problems when marketing your business is not being clear on what the heck it is you do. It may be quite clear in your mind what you do but when you say it to other people, especially the ones you want to help it confuses them. Stop trying to impress people with your industry highfalutin mobo jumbo. I have been on a networking binge lately and I’ve come across many business owners and when I ask then what they do after five minutes I still have no idea what the heck they are talking about. I’ll ask questions to clarify what it is they do to see if I can possibly refer someone to them in my travels and sometimes that doesn’t help either. So, what happens? I just smile nod politely and move on to someone else.
But I’ve also been on the receiving end where I was unclear about what the heck it is I do. Thankfully, my network is honest with me and let me know they hadn’t a clue of what I did. So, I went back to the drawing board and worked on clarifying what it is I do.
So one huge reason people may not be referring you clients or your ideal clients don’t see you as their solution may be because they don’t understand what you do and who you do it for. And, that’s really what people need to understand.
Your assignment this week is to work on being crystal clear in communicating what it is you do and who you do it for so anyone, even a child can understand. Test it out on someone who you trust to give you honest feedback and tell you what they understand from what you said. Or, before you even try that, ask them to tell you what they think you do.
