Keep your eyes on your own paper

You do it. I do it. She does it too! What do we do?

We compare ourselves to someone else. Why do we torture ourselves? Most times when we are comparing ourselves to someone else we are already feeling behind and a little down on ourselves. Then for some reason we go and make ourselves feel even worse by comparing ourselves to someone else who’s way further along in their career than we are. They’ve spent days, weeks, months, years, decades getting to where they are. But that doesn’t cross your mind when you are comparing yourself to someone who is more established than you, does it? Nope, all you see is where they are and where you are not.

Let’s end this vicious cycle. Realize in order to have what that person has you have to be willing to go through all the toils and troubles they went through to get there. Because their life trials, just like yours, made them who they are today. And, I don’t know about you but I have no interest in going through what Maya Angelou went through to get to where she is. I got enough problems.

Your stellar assignment

The next time you catch yourself comparing your progress to someone else’s, ask yourself:
  • How long did it take that person to get to where they are?
  • How did they do it?
  • Are you willing to have the same dedication to your goal?
Because they didn’t just wake up and ta da! they were there. They had to work on it. Just like you are working on it now. So one day, someone will compare themselves to you.
